Aberdeen Paupers 1881

In 1895 the two parishes of St. Nicholas and Old Machar who had hitherto provided poor relief for the whole of Aberdeen, finally united and established the Aberden Poorhouse which was administered by Aberdeen City Council. The buildings were sold in 1908 following the opening of the Oldmill Poorhouse. The site was later used for St Peter's Roman Catholic School, which is now demolished.

Forfar Paupers 1881

On 28 June 1861 the Corporation of Forfar opened the first Poor Law institution for the district on Abroath Road in Forfar. The austere new building housed 85 inmates and was extended four years later. An infirmary was built on the other side of Arbroath Road to accommodate the chronically sick and the worst of the mental defectives and lunatics.

At the Union of the kingdoms in 1707 the Peerage Roll of Scotland contained ten dukes, three marquises, seventy-five earls, seventeen viscounts, and forty-nine barons—in all, a hundred and fifty-four peers. There have been subsequently enrolled one duke, two marquises, two earls, and six barons.

Inscriptions In St. Cuthbert's Churchyard, Edinburgh

The present volume deals only with that portion of the burying ground lying more immediately round the church, and extending up the "knowe" to the south west. The latter part is the most ancient portion of the churchyard, and has probably been a place of interment for more than a thousand years, as we know there has been a church on the present site from very early times.
