The Parish, comprising the Townships of Seaham, Seaton, and Slingley is bounded on the North by Bishopwearmouth, on the West by Houghton-le-Spring, on the South by Daltonle-Dale, and on the East by the German Ocean.
The Parish of Seaham comprises an area of 2,392 acres. The Church was possibly originally dedicated to St. Andrew, and subsequently re-dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin.

1815 Jan. 2nd. George Gordon Byron, Lord Byron of Rochdale, and Anne Isabella Milbanke, of this parish, were married in Seaham House by special license, by me Tho. Noel, Rector of Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire, in presence of John Cam Hobhouse, of Chauntry House, Wilts, and Richard Wallis, Vicar of Seaham."
