The Merchant Seaman Crew Agreement Lists (CAL) for the year of 1851 are important in genealogy terms for a number of reasons: firstly, this is a census year in which the men on ships were not necessarily recorded in the census; secondly, at this period, the authorities were attempting a registration process where they kept a Register of Seaman.
