Extract from Report of Captain Kennedy :— November 25, 1847.
An immense number of small landholders are under ejectment, or notice to quit, even where the rents have been paid up. The universal and minute subdivision of land may have rendered this a matter of necessity and good policy, but its immediate effect cannot fail to prove most disastrous, a great majority being determined to overhold if they can, and are in the mean time deterred from doing anything to the land. Such wholesale proceedings must, I fear, also affect the peace of the district.
